In December 2020 a Christmas tree measuring almost six metres was erected in the foyer of Venice’s Benedetto Marcello Conservatory of Music. Normally the tree would be adorned with the conservatory’s own collection of decorations, however they had been destroyed in the devastating high water the previous year. Rather than purchasing new decorations, the conservatory had decided to allocate their available funds to the restoration of other valuable items also damaged during the high water. The Christmas tree was not destined to remain unadorned however. Over 20 Venetian artists, business and artisans, including YALI Glass, came to the rescue by providing a vast array of beautiful handcrafted objects to hang on the tree.
Interior designer Matteo Corvino was the project’s artistic co-ordinator.
The Municipal Councilor for Social Cohesion and Economic Development, Simone Venturini, inaugurated the tree on December 12th, 2020 by saying that the tree represents a hymn to both music and craftsmanship. Illuminating the tree, he said, would also serve to illuminate our thoughts during such a difficult moment for Venice and the whole world.
